Success Marks the Career of Dick DeVos as a Philanthropist

Dick DeVos is the eldest son of Richard DeVos, Amway Corporations co-founder. The Amway Corporation is a network sales firm specializing in the distribution of personal care, household, and health products through dealers. Dick DeVos began working in 1974 holding various managerial roles in his family’s business, the Amway Corporation. He became Amway’s vice president in 1984 and was responsible for overseeing its operations in 18 countries. That enabled him to gain experience outside of his family’s business. In 1989, Dick DeVos stepped down as Amway’s Vice President to start The Windquest Group, a new venture involved in the marketing of closet and storage organizers.

Dick DeVos was in 1991 appointed by his father to manage their newly acquired basketball franchise, Orlando Magic Basketball. Besides his role in the recently purchased Orlando Magic Basketball franchise, Dick DeVos remained involved in the management of the Windquest Group. Later on, Dick DeVos succeeded his father as the Amway Corporation’s president. In 2000, he spearheaded the restructuring of the Amway Corporation into an umbrella firm referred to as the Alticor Corporation. It comprised of the Access Business Group, the Amway Corporation, and the Quixtar Corporation. Under the Alticor Corporation, the Amway Corporation scaled its operations to over 50 countries in six continents.

Dick DeVos retired as Alticor Corporation’s president in 2002 to devote his time and expertise to his private venture, the Windquest Group, and politics. He entered politics in 2006 when he ran for the governor of Michigan as a Republican nominee. By then, DeVos was regarded as the wealthiest person to have contested for the post of Michigan governor. Dick DeVos utilized his wealth to finance his campaign, spending approximately $40 million. While wealth seems significant in politics, in this case, his wealth proved to be of little help. Unfortunately, he lost by a 14 point margin to the Democratic incumbent Jennifer Granholm.

Dick DeVos is married to Besty DeVos, a daughter of the Prince Corporation founder, Edgar Prince. Betsy DeVos’ brother, Erik Prince, owned and managed the Blackwater, a private security firm based in North Carolina. Dick DeVos resides in Grand Rapids, Michigan with his wife, Betsy DeVos, and their three children, Andrea, Rick, Ryan, and Elissa. His wife, Betsy DeVos was in 2017 appointed by the Trump Administration as the U.S. Secretary of Education. However, the Vice President, Pence, had to cast a tie-breaking vote as the Senate barely approved her nomination.
