Brief blog about film industry development in Chicago
One of the largest film studios was located in Chicago. It was called Universal Studios (now known as Universal Studios Hollywood). This studio created many movies that were popular at that time. These movies included “Dracula,” which starred Bela Lugosi; “Frankenstein,” which starred Boris Karloff; and “Jaws,” which starred Roy Scheider and Richard Dreyfuss. The city also had many other movie companies, including Warner Bros., 20th Century Fox, Columbia Pictures, and United Artists. Many famous actors worked in these companies, including Charlie Chaplin, Humphrey Bogart, Fredric March, Bette Davis, Clark Gable, and John Wayne.
According to Alex Pissios, the first movie theater in the United States was built in New York City. The first movie theater that was built in Chicago was called Biograph Theater. It opened on May 25, 1896, and had 300 people. It was located at 1517-1519 S. Wabash Ave. The Biograph Theater later became known as the Majestic Theater and then the Regent Theatre. It was built in 1894 and was owned by John L. Smith. The theater was subsequently sold to William A. Brady, who changed the name to the Majestic Theater. The Majestic Theater had 1,000 people, and it was located at 1450 S. Dearborn St… This building is still standing today, and it is now known as the Chicago Theater.
Alex Pissios success led him to go on to produce many other movies. He worked with many actors such as John Barrymore, Clark Gable, Marlene Dietrich, and Humphrey Bogart. One of Pissios’s most famous movies was “The Cat and the Canary.” This movie was based on a play of the same name, and it starred his wife, Pola Negri. The film was a success at the box office because it cost $50,000 to make, and it sold for only $5,000. The movie starred Pola Negri as a woman who got revenge on her unfaithful lover by singing a song that causes cats to die. Alex Pissios also wrote the story for this movie.
